Complete Guide to Surviving 1st Year at JUIT
Welcome to Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Waknaghat! This beautiful campus, located in the Shivalik hills, is going to be your home for the next four years. Moving into a fully residential college can be scary, but we have all the tips and tricks to help you survive!
1. The Hostel Life: Azad & Geeta Bhawan
As a first-year boy, you will be staying in Azad Bhawan, and girls will be in the junior wing of Geeta Bhawan. The university has a strict policy of separating first-year hostels from the ones occupied by senior hostelers to prevent ragging.
- The Rooms: All rooms in JUIT are double-seated with beds, study tables, chairs, and almirahs. Don't forget to enjoy the ever-so-stunning views from the windows! Especially during the monsoon and winters!
- Essentials to Bring: Although the university will provide you with all the basics, make sure to carry a mattress protector (you will live, sleep, and die on that), kettle (hide it well!), an umbrella (it does rain a lot), and warm clothes (it can get COLD during the winter).
- Laundry & Hot Water: You will be provided with hot water throughout the year, which is super important. Additionally, laundry will be available TWICE A WEEK!
2. Academics & Attendance
Academics and attendance are taken pretty seriously at JUIT. Ensure that your attendance stays above 80% in all of your subjects. Anything below that and you risk getting debarred from appearing in the End Semester Examinations (T3).
Don't pull all-nighters, because trust us, you will barely have any time for them during the semester. We suggest utilizing the T1, T2, and T3 exams along with your assignments for the continuous assessment of your academics. Make sure to use a proper timetable app (like this one!) to schedule your classes and practicals so that you don't end up missing out.
3. The Mess & Food
The mess provides you with 4 meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks, and Dinner). The variety of food keeps changing and although the mess food will never be as good as home-cooked meals, it's clean and hygienic.
Pro tip: Don't skip on the Evening Snacks! It's also a great time to mingle after a long day of classes.
4. Clubs and Extracurriculars
While pursuing undergraduate studies in engineering is not a cakewalk, giving your personality a shape by participating in extra-curricular activities is equally important. JUIT has plenty of student clubs and societies such as technical societies (IEEE Student Branch, ACM Student Chapter, and SIAM) and the Youth Club, Koshish Club, and various sport clubs for culture lovers and athletes respectively. With great facilities in hand to play Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, and many more, the first year is the best time to explore and indulge in your hobby. Don't forget to audition in your favorite clubs!
